Horse Care students at the Australian College of Animal Care have a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with one of the world’s rarest and most captivating horse breeds—the Norwegian Fjord Horse—at Tarcombe Fjord Horse Stud.
Located on the historic Tarcombe property in regional Victoria, this ethical, welfare-first stud offers students an immersive learning experience in equine care, handling, and horsemanship. Fjord horses are renowned for their calm, intelligent, and people-oriented nature, making them ideal for learners developing confidence and practical handling skills.
What makes Tarcombe truly special is its commitment to thoughtful, small-scale breeding rooted in the five domains of animal welfare. Each foal is raised with care and respect for their individuality, ensuring physical and emotional wellbeing from day one. Students will engage in real-world, welfare-centred practices—ranging from herd management using the equicentral method, to daily handling, grooming, health care routines, and more.
Whether you’re completing a work placement or attending a hands-on workshop, training at Tarcombe offers more than just skills—it’s a chance to connect deeply with these exceptional horses and be part of a stud that prioritises sustainability, ethics, and meaningful human–animal bonds.
If you enrol under the Blended Learning option that includes access to Tarcombe Fjords, there are no additional costs as it is already included in your course fees.
Tarcombe offers a range of engaging workshops led by our experienced and qualified Educators and Accredited Riding Coaches. These sessions are your chance to build confidence, sharpen your skills, and complete the practical assessments required for your qualification—all in a supportive, real-life learning environment. Work placement is also available.
Horse riding instruction is not available on the fjord horses for people new to riding. We do have partnerships with local riding schools with lesson horses for those new to riding to learn at.
